2nd April 2003, Africa/Senegal : Senegal
beat them all. El Hadji Diouf of English club Liverpool has benn
voted African player of the year 2002. It his second time after
winning the titel in 2001 too. Runners-up is Pape Bouba Diop from
French club Racing Lens and Ahmed Hossam from Dutch club Ajax
Amsterdam finished third. Tony Sylva from French club AS Monaco has
been voted best goalkeeper. Bruno Metsu the former Senegal national
team manager has been voted best manager and his team has been
choosen as best team in 2002. Metsu took the Senegal national team
into the World Cup quarter finals. 28th March 2003, Poland
: GKS Katowice have changed their name to Dospel Katowice
after being saved from bankruptcy. An industrial and household goods
manufacturer saved the club. 5th March 2003, Italy
: The Italian Football Federation continues to put a cap on
the number of players from countries outside the European Union. For
the next season the Italian FA permits Serie A teams to sign just
one non-EU player, and only to replace a non-EU player already at
the club. Teams promoting to Serie A next season will have a quota
of three non-EU players. From the start of the 2003/04 campaign
there will be a complete block on non-EU players entering Serie B
and Serie C. There will be no future restriction on clubs nominating
all their non-EU players for match day. 3rd March 2003, Poland
: Wisla Krakow striker Maciej Zurawski has been named
Poland's footballer of the year for 2002. 14th February 2003,
USA : The 13-year-old talent Freddy Adu has gained the
American citizenship so that he can play for the under-17 national
team. When he was 11 he moved to the United States from Ghana with
his family. Currently Adu is with the Under-17 residency program at
the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida. 12th February 2003,
Estonia : A month after changing their name to FC
LevadiaKalev Tallinn, FC Levadia Maardu have changed to their old
club name. 11th Februay 2003, Yugoslavia : The
Yugoslavian parliament decided to change the name Yugoslavia into
Serbia and Montenegro. UEFA and FIFA agreed also on the name change
of the Yugoslavian national team into Serbia and
Montenegro. 10th February 2003, Czech Republic : Tomas
Rosicky of German club Borussia Dortmund has been voted Czech Player
of the Year 2002. Runners-up is his team mate at Dortmund, Jan
Koller. Pavel Nedved from Italian club Juventus finished
third. 5th February 2003, Switzerland : Former
Switzerland Champion FC Sion now playing 2nd divison terminated all
player contracts due to financial reasons. The promotion play-offs
will start one month ahead and the club decided to play the play-off
with players who agree a new wage shortage contract. 3rd

players playing in a 1st and 2nd Bundesliga club's amateur team are
no longer allowed to name for match day. This should improve the
youth player's development. This new rule effects only players
signed after 20th January 2003. 14th January 2003, Japan
: Japan international and Hamburger SV(Ger) player Naohiro
Takahara has been named 2002 player of the year. Junichi Inamoto was
runner-up followed by Hidetoshi Nakata and Keisuke Tsuboi. Nakata
and Tsuboi have to share the third place. 14th January 2003
: Bayern München's Oliver Kahn has been voted World
Goalkeeper of the Year 2002. Runners-up is Real Madrid's Iker
Casillas and Fenerbahce Istanbul's Receber Rüstü finished third.
Kahn is the third goalkeeper after Walter Zenga and Jose Luis
Chilavert who has won this title three times. 13th January

have changed their name to Topedo Meallurg. Rostselmash

27th December 2002, England : FC Chelsea's
Australian goalkeeper Mark Bosnich is facing a worldwide ban after
been tested positive for cocaine. Bosnich will be suspended from all
football activities until charges have been heard. Chelsea already
suspended the former Manchester Utd player before the results of the
B sample were known. 27th December 2002, Slovakia :
Miroslav Karhan, captain of German VfL Wolfsburg, has been
voted Slovakian player of the year 2002. Austria Wien midfielder
Vladimir Janocko, who was voted Austrian player of the year, has
been voted second. Middlesbrough striker Szilard Nemeth finished

Leverkusen's striker Dimitar Berbatov has been voted Bulgarian
Player of the Year 2002. While having some problems this season he
played a great last season finishing second in German League, German

to FC Ilyichevets Mariupol. They decided to change the name as two
other Ukrainian team use the name "Metallurg". Ilyichevets derives
from the name of the main sponsor, metal factory Ilyich. 19th

Raimondas Zutautas has been named Lithuanian player of the year
2002. Krylya Sovetov Samara striker Robertas Poskus finished second
and FC Porto striker Edgaras Jankauskas ended up third. 17th
December 2002, FIFA : Ronaldo has been named FIFA's World
Player of the Year 2002. It's the third time the Real Madrid player
has won this title. Bayern München's goalkeeper Oliver Kahn secured
the second place. It's the best place for a goalkeeper ever at the
FIFA's World Player of the Year award. Third is Real Madrid's

Shakhar Donetsk's Anatoliy Tymoschuk has been named
Ukrainian Player of the Year 2002. AC Milan striker Andriy
Shevchenko finished only second. Dynamo Kiev midfielder Andriy Husin

Midfielder Samir Aliyev from Ukrainian club Volyn Lutsk has
been voted player of the year 2002 in Azerbaijan. He is one of the
one of the brightest young talents in Azerbaijan. 16th
December 2002, Italy : Chievo Verona winger Luciano Siqueira
will return to league business on 26th January, when his team meets
Perugia, after his seven month ban has been reduced. He was
suspended after it had been revealed that he played with an assumed
identity. 11th December 2002, Germany : A fan offered
a 2 million EURO Christmas gift to Hannover 96. There hasn't been a
decision made about how the money should be transfered and if he has
got the 2 million. 11th December 2002,
UEFA/Austria/Switzerland : UEFA has choosen Austria and
Switzerland to host the UEFA European Championship in 2008.

midfielder Carlos Gurtegi facing a ban after he has been tested
positive for the banned steroid nandrolone. December 2002,
UEFA : Ronaldo has been named European Player of the Year
2002. Real Madrid's Roberto Carlos has been voted second and Bayern
München goalkeeper Oliver Kahn finished third. December 2002,
Armenia : Armenian Premier League clubs FC Spartak Yerevan
and FC Banants have announced to merge to play a successful new
season. The name of the new club is still unknown. Also it hasn't
been decided who will be the new manager and board members. Banants
manager Armen Gyulbuagyants is the favorite for manager post.
Spartak Yerevan's president is expected to be the new club's
chairman.

The ownership of struggling russian club FC Torpedo-ZIL has
been changed. The new ownership of Torpedo, who may now also be
relocated to Krasnoyarsk, can lead to a name change. It wouldn't be
the first name change in club history. Torpedo were founded in 1931,
and were originally known as RDPK. The club has won the Russian
title in 1960, 1965 and 1976. 30th November 2002, Senegal :

November 2002, Germany : It seems that the agreed fusion
between SV Waldhof Mannheim and VfR Mannheim can be canceled now, as
VfR chairman Wolfgang Ulrich says that some contract agreements
hasn't been fulfilled by the SV Waldhof. The major point at issue is
the new club name SV Mannheim. How will this story end? We will see.

without midfielder Hasan Salihamidzic for the rest of the season
because of a serious knee injury. He has got damaged right knee

England striker and Leicester local hero Gary Lineker, who leads a
consortium of Leicester people, makes a bid to buy English club
Leicter City which will secure the future of the football club.
First division club Leicester currently set course to promotion for
Premier League has financial problems. 22nd November 2002,
Colombia : Carlos Valderrama, who was voted Colombia's
player of the last century last year, honoured by Colombian soccer
officials who unveiled a seven-meter tall bronze statue in his home
town Santa Marta. The former Colombian captain is known by soccer
fans all around world by his funky, afro-like hairstyle. 22nd
November 2002, England : The English FA reacted towards the
clubs financial problems. All 72 English first to third division
clubs agreed on a salary cap. A maximum of 60% of the clubs budget
can be spend on player salaries.

20th November 2002, Germany : German
FA(DFB) and German Soccer League(DFL) agreed about a pilot project
to install a fourth referee. It's a result after discussions over
recent poor referee performances. At first the fourth referee will
only be installed for the 1st Bundesliga. The project will start
with the beginning of the league's second half at 25th January 2003.
The extra costs of 500.000 Euro will be paid by the clubs.

Amica Wronki's midfielder Pawel Skrzypek is facing
disciplinary action from Polish FA after twice testing positive for
a banned substance. He was tested for pseudoephedrine on samples
taken after a league match against Legia Warszawa in August. He
denied taking any banned substance but it had been confirmed by two
independent institutes. The long term ban he is facing could end his
career. 19th November 2002, Italy : Italian player's
union (AIC) wants a season's 6 months "time-out". Chairman Sergio
Campana said that the league needs a time to think about the current
league situation e.g. about the violence in the stadiums, referee

Kärnten and BSV Bad Bleiberg agreed a co-operation for the youth
development. Their motto is "United we are strong". 18th
November 2002, Italy : Messina's goalkeeper Emanuela Manitta
had been beaten up in their away match against Cagliari by a
Cagliari fan. The referee called the match off. The Italian Fa had
spoken out Stadium ban for Cagliari until all details about the case
are known. 4th November 2002, Germany : SV Mannheim's
midfielder Erol Bekirovski has taken on the name of his father. His
name is now Erol Bekir.

London's midfielder Fredrik Ljungberg has been named Sweden's player
of 2002. 17th November 2002, Finland : FC Liverpool's
defender Sami Hyypiä has been named Finland's player of 2002. FC
Haka's Valeri Popovitch has been named footballer of the year in the
Finnish first division. Keith Armstrong who let HJK Helsinki to
the championship was named manager of the year. 13th November
2002, Austria : SV Salzburg's goalkeeper Szabolcs Safar was
been granted the Austrian nationality. The born Hungarian was glad
about it as Austria ans especially Salzburg has become his new
center of life. He joined SV Salzburg in 1997. 13th November
2002, Spain : The Spanish FA "RFEF" decided that from now on
also amateur and women teams are allowed to sign non-EC players.
12th November 2002, Spain : A 18 year old player and
his family have beaten up a referee in a youth match after the
player has been shown the yellow card. It wasn't even red. Some
referee decision are questionable but it's not okay to start beating
up for it. They are only human, who do mistakes, too. Please
remember : It's only a game. 3rd November 2002,
Zimbabwe/South African : The Zimbabwean-born twins Wilfred
and William Mugeyi have been granted the South African nationality.
This will make the two talented player capable to play for South
Africa as they havn't played for Zimbabwe yet. 9th October
2002, Iceland : Finnur Kolbeinsson has been voted player of
the year by the Icelandic FA. He is playing for Icelandic cup winner
Fylkir. Willum Thor Thorsson of champion KR Reykjavik has been

: Chievo Verona manager Luigi Del Neri has won the 'Golden
Bench' award. This award goes to the best Serie A and Serie B
manager of the year. The winner of this award is been voted by the
Serie A and Serie B managers themselves. 1st October, FIFA
: The FIFA plans to install a referee assistant behind the
goal. The "goal-referee"-projekt should start in Junuary or summer
2003 for all international competitions including the Confederations
Cup and Women World Cup. 26th September, Germany
: Tennis Borussia Berlin's goalkeeper Dennis Otzik decided to
take on his wife's surname. His name will be now Dennis Ganschow.

soccer stars are currently facing charges. SuperSports defender
Japie Motale of murder, Jeremy Jansen of attempted rape.
August 2002, Spain : Celta Vigo's Ecuadorian
international striker Ivan Kaviedes has been granted Spanish
nationality. He signed for Celta in 1999. Kaviedes played for
Ecuador in the FIFA World Cup in Korea/Japan. 07th August,
Italy : The former Serie A club Fiorentina AC have been
confirmed as a Serie C1 club today to be called Fiorentina 1926
Florentia. Fiorentina who had won the Italian championship two times
have been liquidated after they couldn't pay their debts. The club
relegated to second division but had to relegate to third division
as they couldn't make financial guarantee. 15th July, Germany
: VfL Wolfsburg's player Charles Akonnor has been granted the
German nationality.

17.07.2002 , Italy : The Italian Football
Federation (FIGC) announced today to limit the number of
non-European Union players at Italian clubs ahead of the new season.
Serie A and B clubs will be allowed to recruit one additional non-EU
player before 31 August deadline. Until further notice from 1
September no further signings from outside the EU will be accepted.
With immediate effect the recruitment of non-EU players at clubs in
Serie C and below is not allowed. The old rulings limited the number
of non-EU players under contract at one club to a maximum of five
and the number of non-EU players used in a league match to three.
Since season 2001/2002 there had been no limitations regarding the
use of foreign players in the Italian league. The new rule won't
take an effect on current contracts. It has been decided to hold on
to this rule for the time being the end of season
2003/2004. 16.07.2002 , Romania : Newly promoted team
AEK Bucharest merged with Politehnica Timisoara. The new club has
been named FC Politehnica AEK Timisoara. AEK were without a home
ground. They moved to Timisoara which is the fourth largest city in
Romania. The Timisoara city council agreed to construct a new
40,000-seater stadium. 16.07.2002 , Romania : 1st
division teams SC Astra Ploiesti and FC Petrolul Ploiesti agreed to
join forces and form a new club. They will start as Astra Ploiesti.
Eight players move from Petrolul Ploiesti to Astra Ploiesti.
Petrolul Ploiesti also continue to exist as a separate club in the
second division 14.07.2002 , Georgia : The Georgian
Football Federation (GFF) has allowed the national Under-19 team
into the first division. This should be a part of their preparations
for the upcoming UEFA European Under-19 Championship. The clubs
don't want their players to spend the whole season with the U-19
side. Details about the "13th team" and the how the fixtures have
been arranged are unknown at the moment. 11.07.2002 , Germany
: The 1.FC Köln's stadium the "Müngersdorfer Stadion" has
been renamed to "RheinEnergieStadion". The second division club and
the GEW RheinEnergie AG sighned a contract until 2009 plus an option
for five more years. The Köln Stadium will be one of the World Cup
2006 stadiums. At the moment the stadium is being rebuilt and will
be finished in 2004. July 2002 , F.Y.R. Macedonia : The
Macedonia FA executive committee has decided that second division
teams can not have foreign players in their

Congratulations Brazil for winning the World Cup 2002 (updated
02/07) |
The following will be a bit of both personal and
offical. Yesterday was the day on which two teams met on the pitch
but only one left as World champion. My friends and I went like many
other supporters of the German team to watch the match on big
screens in the public. All hopes and wishes had been destroyed by
two goals of one person : Ronaldo. At the first moment the world
seemed to collapse but at the next moment reality came back and we
noticed what the German team had achieved. I have give special
thanks to the manager Rudi Völler and the captain Oliver
Kahn. The Brazilian team wasn't the better team but again their
individual players settled the match. Congratulations to a great
Brazilian team which has won all matches and produced with Ronaldo
the World Cup top scorer.

Germany : The Oberliga Nord-Ost club FSV Lok
Altmark Stendal will play from now on as 1.FC Lokomotive Stendal.
FSV Lok Altmark Stendal merged with 1.FC Stendal. Austria
: After the final out and relegation to third division of
Austrian club FC Innsbruck Tirol a new club the FC Wacker Tirol was
founded. New and old manager should be Joachim Löw. The club's board
is in negotiations with the manager. Germany : 2.Bundesliga
club SV Waldhof Mannheim will play from now on as SV Mannheim. They
merged with Mannheim club VfR Mannheim which played in the
Regionalliga before. It's not sure how or if the VfR Mannheim will
exist in the future. There are negotiations that the VfR Mannheim
might play in the Oberliga. Germany : The SCB Preussen Köln
has been renamed to SCB Viktoria Köln. |

has been confirmed but the name of Atlantis will disappear. The club
continues the competition as AC Vantaan Allianssi. Their licence had
been removed by Finland's football authorities due to heavy debts.
